1. French lawmakers approve 3% tax on online giants
The lower house of the French parliament approved a small, pioneering tax on internet giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook.
  • The French government hopes that other countries will follow the suit.
  • The bill foresees a 3 per cent tax on the French revenues of digital companies with global revenue of more than 750 million Euros.
2. Duty-Free shops at Dubai airports to accept Indian currency
Dubai Duty-Free has announced that Indian Rupee will now be an accepted currency at all the retail outlets of the Dubai airport.
  • However, the change, if any, will be given back in Dirhams and not the Indian currency.
  • Stores at the Dubai Airport will accept notes of various denominations, including 100s, 200s, 500s and 2000s.
  • The move makes the Indian rupee the 16th international currency to be accepted at Dubai's airports.
  • According to a report, out of the 90 million passengers who used Dubai's airports, 12 million of them travelled to or from Indian destinations.
3. Japan and Singapore topped in Passport rankings
According to the latest Henley Passport Index 2019 Japan and Singapore have ranked on top which means that these two countries have the most powerful passports in the world.
  • India stands at 86th position in this index with a mobility score of 58.
  • India shares this 86th position with Mauritiana and Sao Tome and Principe.
  • The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations including micro-states and territories.
4. UP govt launches toll-free CM helpline 1076
Uttar Pradesh government launched a toll-free Chief Minister helpline 1076.
  • The helpline will enable people from across the state to register their complaints and will ensure time-bound action on the complaints also.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will personally review the complaints every month and if a department gets more than 100 complaints in a month, action will be taken against the concerned officials.
  • The Chief Minister said that people now don't need to travel to Lucknow just to lodge their complaints.
  • He also warned that action will be taken against those who make false complaints and play mischief with the helpline.
5. Bonalu festival kicks off at Golconda Fort
The annual Bonalu festival kicked off in the city at the historic Golconda Fort of Hyderabad.
  • Bonalu is an annual festival of Telangana celebrated in Twin Cities Hyderabad, Secunderabad and other parts of Telangana.
  • It is celebrated every year in a grand manner in the state during the first month of the monsoon season.
6. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents Union Budget
Newly appointed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the first budget of the second term of the Narendra Modi government.
  • It was the maiden budget for Sitharaman, who becomes the second woman finance minister after Indira Gandhi to do so in the history of independent India.
  • This is the 89th Union budget.
  • In view of the general elections 2019, the interim Budget for the current fiscal was presented by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal in February.
Points to Remember
  • Till the year 2016, the Union Budget was presented on the last working day of February. Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had changed the tradition in 2017 when the Union Budget was presented on February 1.
  • The Railway Budget will also be presented along with the Union Budget.
  • This practice was also begun in the year 2016, where the practice of presenting the rail budget separately was discarded.
7. Harideesh Kumar appointed as the Director of Institute of Banking Personnel Selection
B Harideesh Kumar has been appointed as director of Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for a period of three years.
  • He hails from Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.
  • Earlier he served as the Executive Director of Canara Bank.
8. Mastercard's Banga, Wipro's Premji to receive excellence awards from USISPF
The Mastercard CEO and President Ajay Banga and Wipro Chairman Azim Premji will receive the 2019 Global Excellence Awards.
  • The award has been announced by US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF)and will be presented at its Second Annual Leadership Summit in Washington on July 11.
  • They have been honoured with the awards for their significant contribution to strengthening economic ties between the US and India.
9. Arjen Robben announces retirement from football
Arjen Robben, the former Bayern Munich and Netherland forward, announced his retirement from football.
  • The 35-year-old has featured in over 500 matches for the club and his country in the entire career.
  • Robben made his professional debut in the year 2000 for FC Groningen but spent the largest chunk of his career at the record German champions.
  • The winger made a total of 309 competitive appearances for Football Club Barcelona (FCB) and racked up 144 goals and 81 assists.
